Leadership Resources

As a Leader on campus you need to make sure that you have the tools necessary to be successful.

Leaders have to constantly hone their own skills through practice, error, and success.  SAL has created a number of resources to help student leaders build competency and surpass any barrier.

The Guidebook for Recognized Student Organizations

Each year, SAL and SOAS collaborate to produce the Guidebook for Recognized Student Organizations.  The Guidebook contains an overview of SOAS procedures and the life cycles of student organizations and events.  From start to finish, the Guidebook is packed with useful information, tips, and policies to help student leaders find their way.

We hope that student leaders will look at the Guidebook before they take action (e.g. your group is going to have a bucket drive on the Diag; look at the SOAS and Diag sections before you go out to make sure you know the necessary policies and procedures).

Handouts

SAL has created and maintains a comprehensive set of handouts for student organizations at the University.  The topics include:

These handouts are the best self-help a student organization leader can have.  They also make a great foundation for a transition notebook.

Library

SAL maintains a full leadership library that ranges from practical exercises to theoretical exploration.  Student leaders may peruse the collection in SAL, 2205 Michigan Union.

Ice Breakers, Energizers

Every student leaders should have a few Ice breakers or energizers they can pull out to keep long meetings lively or to get groups of people past initial awkwardness.

SAL has compiled a list of some of these exercises (pdf).  Also, check out SAL's leadership library for more ideas.
